Apprentice Kevin Diaz Remarks at Apprenticeships for America conference

“Good afternoon. My name is Kevin Diaz, a Business Operations Apprentice at Acquired Data Solutions, and junior at Ohio University.

I want to take a moment to share with you my journey into the world of apprenticeship and how it has transformed both my life and career aspirations. My professional journey began in the summer of 2020 when I had the opportunity to intern with Acquired Data Solutions as part of the summer youth employment program. 

As a senior in high school, I discovered the CareerWise Apprenticeship program, which allowed me to continue working with Acquired Data Solutions, or ADS, throughout the school year. That same year, I officially started my apprenticeship journey with ADS in February 2021. As a high school student, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do next in my career, but I was confident that I wanted to gain professional experience in a STEM-related field. It’s why I wanted to join ADS to learn more about cybersecurity and the technology solutions changing our world. An apprenticeship would not only allow me to further develop my skills but also pave the way for a fulfilling career ahead.

Through my apprenticeship, I've had the privilege of exploring various aspects of the business world. Initially starting on the marketing side, I delved into graphic design, content creation for LinkedIn, and even had the chance to work on animation videos which allowed me to develop my creativity skills. However, my journey didn't stop there. As I progressed, I found myself drawn to business development, where I took on responsibilities such as generating leads and reaching out to potential clients to drive business growth. This enabled me to be a more effective communicator when working with prospective clients.

Three years later, I am now in the ADS finance department, collaborating with project managers to ensure both our client and organization’s return on investments. I have improved my critical and analytical skills while taking on these new challenges. This ability to move seamlessly across different departments and wear multiple hats, has been invaluable. I've come to realize that every skill I acquire is transferable, making each task I undertake immensely valuable.

What's most exciting about my journey is its constant evolution. Every year presents new challenges, opportunities to learn, and roles to explore within the company. These chances to grow  not only broadens my understanding of the business landscape but also hones my adaptability skills, preparing me for whatever the future may hold.

The interest I gained through my apprenticeship inspired me to study Management Information Systems and Business Analytics at Ohio University and pursue a career in Data Analytics. My apprenticeship helped me develop my self confidence and ability to take initiative. 

Even though I am in the last year of my apprenticeship, this is only the beginning. My involvement with ADS extends beyond the apprenticeship program, and I look forward to reaching new heights in my current and future roles. 

My apprenticeship journey with CareerWise DC and ADS has been nothing short of transformative. It has not only shaped my career aspirations but has also instilled in me a sense of confidence and adaptability that will serve me well in any path I choose to pursue.
