CityWorks DC and Department of Labor Launch the First Federal Youth Apprenticeship Program

The DC nonprofit will support the three-year federal youth apprenticeship program at the U.S. Department of Labor

Washington, DC – Today, the US Department of Labor’s (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA) announced the launch of the first Federal Youth Apprentice Pathway. CityWorks DC will assist U.S. DOL in recruiting, training, and supporting the hired District of Columbia youth apprentices and their supervisors within the federal government throughout the three-year career progression. Upon the apprentices’ completion of the program, they will have the opportunity to enter into a permanent federal position. This program was developed as part of a Biden Administration Executive Order to expand registered apprenticeships

“We are overjoyed to bring this opportunity to District youth and help close the opportunity gap in our city,” said Jennie Niles, CityWorks DC President and CEO. “Many thanks to our partners at the  US Department of Labor and CItyWorks DC Vice President Lateefah Durant for their work over the past 18 months to bring this idea to fruition for the students of the District of Columbia.”

CityWorks DC is committed to bridging the opportunity divide for youth in Washington, DC. Through its flagship apprenticeship program, CareerWise DC, an affiliate of CareerWise USA, and comprehensive system-wide initiatives, the organization creates pathways to sustainable careers for DC's young people. By cultivating new mindsets, policies, practices, and data systems, CityWorks DC aims to facilitate greater participation of students and businesses in a thriving local talent ecosystem driven by DC residents. CityWorks DC empowers regional employers by providing them access to a diverse pool of talent, well-defined training programs, and clear pathways for professional growth and organizational success.

"Our goal is to continue to ensure a more equitable and diverse workforce," said Brent Parton, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Employment and Training Administration, in his recent blog post. "Through this pilot, we will help model ways federal agencies can partner with Registered Apprenticeship Intermediaries to create high-quality career pathways to good federal jobs and the apprentices will gain valuable career training and experience working in our Offices of Apprenticeship, Workforce Investment and Job Corps."

CityWorks DC is proud to work with the US Department of Labor to provide this exceptional opportunity for the young people of our nation's capital.
