CityWorks DC Celebrates Students and Employers During National Apprenticeship Week
Week-Long Celebration Highlights the Multiple Pathways for Long-Term Student Success
Washington, DC--CityWorks DC, a leading collaborator in the DC education-to-employment ecosystem, is bringing together school leaders, employers, and students to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week. Over the course of the week, CityWorks DC will host discussions on the organization's youth apprenticeship program, CareerWise DC, and offer considerations for how to measure the success of student early career outcomes in partnership with the DC Policy Center.
“We know that talent is equally distributed across DC, but that opportunity is not,” said Jennie Niles, CEO of CityWorks DC. “National Apprenticeship Week is an opportunity for employers throughout the region to examine how they are building an equitable talent pipeline, and for students to learn about all of the different ways to learn, work, and succeed in the long term.”
CityWorks DC is devoted to reshaping the landscape of education and career development opportunities for DC youth of color through paid, relevant work experience, industry-valued credentials, and social capital–Niles calls this the “social mobility trifecta.” The organization, which launched 2019, offers programs for DC high school students and young adult learners in partnership with schools and regional employers in industries such as IT, business operations and health care as well as systems-change initiatives that are designed to examine and strengthen the structures needed to build an equitable talent pipeline that supports sustainable careers and drives regional growth. CareerWise DC, the organization’s signature apprenticeship program, launched in 2020 with the support of the Federal City Council with 14 youth apprentices, four high schools, and six employers. In fall 2021, a second cohort of more than 30 apprentices started with 10 additional employers.
Throughout National Apprenticeship Week, CityWorks DC will be hosting a range of events for students and employers, including co-hosting a networking event for cyber security apprenticeships with CompTIA and the Greater Washington Partnership on Wednesday, November 17 at 4 p.m. To register, RSVP to comptiaregistration@comptia.org with your name and company.
Also on Wednesday, November 17 at 10 a.m. ET, CityWorks DC, in partnership with the DC Policy Center, CityWorks DC is releasing “Measuring early career outcomes in D.C.,” a report focused on the importance of measuring the early career outcomes of the District’s public and public charter school graduates. The report also showcases best practices from around the region and suggests considerations for D.C. to collect and utilize this data to improve the outcomes of its young adults.
